Looped In Lands at 42nd and Woodland

Looped In, University City District's innovative social seating structure poised to "pop-up" in University City public spaces, has found a new home at 42nd and Woodland. Looped In was developed to be a unique and portable seating system that encourages gathering and interaction, and was conceptualized and designed by Brian Phillips and Interface Studio Architects (ISA).

In 2012, Woodland Green, at 42nd and Woodland, became the first project to be implemented through Philadelphia's Pedestrian Plaza Program. UCD's design combined an under-utilized street segment with a barren traffic triangle to create a new oasis for pedestrians. After two years serving as a gateway to Woodland Avenue where pedestrians relaxed at tables and chairs shaded by trees and umbrellas, the City of Philadelphia decided to make the temporary street changes permanent, and replaced the street with grass.

The newly re-opened area will next be redesigned and developed by UCD to include permanent, pedestrian-friendly amenities. In the meantime, the Looped In chairs will provide a meeting place for people to gather and relax before the seats are incorporated into the final design.
