Trolley Portal Gardens Construction Update

Jun 06, 2017 6 years ago

In December we celebrated a ceremonial groundbreaking for Trolley Portal Gardens, the future site of a public space and restaurant at the 40th Street Trolley Portal. Since then, UCD has been hard at work with our partners, finalizing the details needed to start construction.

Today we are pleased to report that Philadelphia general contractor Domus will begin construction on the site in the coming days. Although the site will undergo a significant physical transformation, SEPTA trolley service will not be disrupted by the construction. The area will remain open to pedestrians for safe access to trolleys.

Construction of the new public space and restaurant, Trolley Car Station, is expected to take approximately ten months to complete. When finished, Trolley Portal Gardens will be a beautiful gateway to West Philadelphia for trolley passengers and a welcoming new public space for neighbors. The Trolley Car Station will be a locally-owned eastern anchor on the fast-growing Baltimore Avenue business corridor, where tens of thousands of neighbors, commuters, university students, and employees from the nearby VA Medical Center and Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia converge.
