What's happening at Woodland Green?

Nearly two years ago, UCD, in partnership with the City of Philadelphia and the University of the Sciences, created Woodland Green, a new pedestrian plaza at the intersection of 42nd St. & Woodland Ave. The idea behind the plaza was to turn the underused street segment connecting 42nd & Woodland Ave. into a green and shady respite for people and wildlife, including the many bees drawn to the native plantings. We set out to beautify the intersection, create a new public space, and reduce stormwater runoff.

We're pleased to announce the temporary project has been so successful that the City has decided to make the plaza permanent. Over the next few months, the city will remove the asphalt and replace the street with a plantable bed. They will also be making upgrades to the traffic signals, including new signal priority for trolleys. To make way for the new, permanent public plaza, Woodland Green is currently being deconstructed. While we’re sad to see it go, we’re excited about what will come next to the plaza – stay tuned for details!
