Jezabel’s (206 S. 45th St) is participating in Dine Latino Restaurant Week! This local fan-favorite restaurant specializes in Northwest Argentine cuisine and operates as a bakery, restaurant, and a farmer’s market. PHLAFF is the Greater Philadelphia region’s only festival showcasing the extraordinary and innovative work of emerging and established Latine/x/a/o filmmakers. Between now and November 15, 2024, they are accepting submissions for their “Los Shorts Program,” “Los Features Program,” and their “Los Especiales Program.” Aspiring filmmakers can learn more here.

Sing Because it is Heard by Betsy Casañas is a mural on the Spring Garden Street Bridge that flourishes with over 6,000 tulips, a historic emblem of growth and progress in the Mantua section of West Philadelphia. It also integrates a Talavera Mexican tile pattern and showcases vivid imagery inspired by traditional Mexican muralism. Lace up your running shoes and get ready to hit the pavement at Penn Park for a fun-filled day of fitness and community support! This event is open to seasoned runners and those looking for a leisurely stroll. Participation in the Wharton Latino 5K supports Alimentando Futuros, a non-profit organization that seeks to increase attendance at schools in low-income areas in Venezuela. You’ll not only be supporting a great cause but also enjoying the beautiful surroundings of Penn Park. Although Hispanic Heritage Month ends on October 15th, there are more ways to celebrate the culture in University City, including:

  • Visiting Hispanic restaurants including the aforementioned Jezabel’s, Taco Taco Mexicano at 261 S. 44th Street, Don Barriga at 4443 Spruce Street, the Tacos Don Memo food truck (various locations including 38th between Walnut and Spruce and frequently at the Clark Park Farmers’ Market), or two locations from locally-owned El Taco & Burritos, found at 3233 Powelton and 3716 Spruce.
  • Checking out Brazilian music on First Fridays with Dende & Band at World Cafe Live 
  •  Or attending the Penn Museum’s annual celebration of Dia de los Muertos as part of CultureFest!
