The West Philly Waterfront

The West Philly Waterfront is our bold plan to create a two-deck waterfront public space with a lush upper deck and a lower deck entertainment hub on the western bank of the Schuylkill River between Market and Chestnut Streets.

Origins.

How the West Philly Waterfront was conceived.

UCD announced plans for the Waterfront in 2024 to seize upon the shared vision for a dynamic and resilient Philadelphia and to provide access and an increased connection to the Schuylkill River. We are currently engaged in fundraising for the project and will next spend time conducting community engagement, making design tweaks, securing permits, and constructing the project.

A Bold Vision for the West Philly Waterfront.

Spanning from Chestnut to Market Streets along Schuylkill Avenue, this two-deck structure will offer stunning views of Center City and serve as a gateway to University City’s universities, health systems, and life sciences companies—solidifying its role as a hub for talent and innovation. In addition to being a place for recreation, the West Philadelphia Waterfront will play a pivotal role in promoting equity and resiliency in public space.

A Space for Community, Equity, and Resilience

The first concept for the Waterfront features a lush promenade, an area for food trucks, and street access, while the lower deck includes a public pool, natural beach, and covered entertainment venue. Designed to foster community and withstand environmental challenges, the West Philly Waterfront promises a unique mix of leisure, recreation, and equity-driven public space.

Partnering for Philadelphia’s Future.

UCD, alongside partners like AECOM, DIGSAU, The Collaborative, and Bio Habitats Inc., is spearheading this transformative project, estimated to cost $60 million. Funding will come from philanthropy, public contributions, and private sources, similar to UCD’s success with Trolley Portal Gardens.
