Congratulations to the Lea School – The First Recyclebank Green School in the Country to Reach Its Fundraising Goal

A few weeks ago, we told you that the Lea School, at 47th & Locust, was selected as one of Recyclebank's Green Schools, eligible to receive funds to build six new raised bed gardens for students, parents, and teachers, greening their asphalt schoolyard. With your help, the Lea School was the first school in the country to reach its fundraising goal of $550! This is a clear indication of University City neighbors' commitment to sustainability, and thanks to everyone who donated their points to Lea for this wonderful project.

Untended vacant lots are an eye sore, but a new study by Penn epidemiologists shows that cleaned and greened lots may reduce crime in the immediate area, as well improving public health.  The study, published this week and based on data from Philadelphia, shows that cleaning and greening vacant lots may reduce gun violence and vandalism.

Pruning Club Hits the Streets Tonight (Monday)

Cooler days are a great opportunity to join the UC Green Pruning Club on its its weekly tree trimming adventures through University City. Tonight, Pruning Club will meet on the corner of 45th St. and Pine Street and prune along the 4500 block of Pine from 6:30 to 8:30pm (or darkness). In the event of high temperature above 95 degrees or heavy rain, Pruning Club will be postponed. Please bring eye protection, hard hat, sharp saw, pruners, and/or a lopper if you have them. (UC Green will also have any of the above items available for loan.)
